No ... but a bizarre "musical" incident occurred last Sunday morning. I was laying in bad half asleep when a thought came into my head, as they tend to do, and for some reason I thought of the theme tune to Champion the Wonder Horse (which I would have watched as a child) and could remember nearly all of the words! Bizarre!

I had the same thing happen to me in college. One of the times that she was singing, I interrupted her and asked her where the money was that I gave her. She replied, "what money", and I said the money I gave her for singing lessons and laughed a little bit. She got the hint and didn't get offended by it, because we were close friends. She did continue singing every once and a while, but not as much as before, so it was a win-win for both of us.

Not to worry....Garth is still singing.

Despite being semi-retired from the business, he continues to record and perform.

He just finished nine consecutive sold out shows at the Sprint Center in Kansas City (November 2 thru November 14)

He also has released "The Ultimate Hits" a new 3-disc set that contains 30 classics, 3 new songs and a bonus track. The set also includes a DVD with videos for all 34 songs including new and never before seen footage.

BTW:

The Great American Country (GAC) television network is airing Garth's Kansas City concert.

Do you really think Disney is focused on making little cartoon movies? They think every actor they have can sing and dance. Plus, they keep making musicals like Camp Rock, and High School Musical. Do you think all they want is little kids' money?
What's up with Disney and singing?
Walt Disney focused on Cartoons and music, and geared toward children from the very beginning. Today Disney continues to follow the original focus, but marketing has changed since Walt was alive, so they do what today's standards require to be successful.
Reply:Adding music to their shows just brings in more money and makes the little kids go gah-gah. Basically, it's all a marketing scam. They figured out that kids are into the pop-music-crap and decided to make everything into a musical now. (which is stupid, because most of the people they hire can't sing at all, they just look pretty)
Reply:I think that most of the people who work for disney know what kids like. Little kids usually like anything cartoon. Older kids like real people so they make movies with real people and face it kids love to sing (well most of the time) I don't know if they just want money that seems whong and I think that they do care about the movies they are making.

I have friends from Europe and they aren't told when they are young "oh your black so you have to listen to black music" My friend , A few summers back was going to a R .Kelly concert and then later that summer a Rolling Stones concert.Music in this country was segregated for so long we don't know how to appreciate other genres. Joss Stone said she grew up listening to Aretha Franklin. That doesn't happen often in this country

Voice and Singing: Vocal range,Warm Up's etc.?

I am auditioning for a local musical in 9 days, August 5th. (from 7-27-07)

And i usually love my voice. but yesterday i think i must have done something to annoy it. I am drinking lots of water, tea with lots of honey, gargaling salt water and breathing steam a few times a day. But is there any kind of exersizes i could do to help this? I am not sure if i should do warm ups or lay low, and try warm ups later this week. But any advise would help. My song that i will be singing is not high range. It is kind of a mix of high and medium.

"Soaring" by Sydney Forest. It is a happy ubeat musical so i want to be in the happy mood and have confidence in my voice. Any tips would be greatly appriciated.

And please do not say i should not take the audition because i am going to no matter waht. this means alot to me. Thanks!
Voice and Singing: Vocal range,Warm Up's etc.?
The voice is like any other muscle. You need to exercise it to improve it.

And, like any other muscle, you must STRETCH well. You know your voice better than I do and know how it feels when it's going out. If you're just vocally tired, continue to warm-up every day (probably no more than 30 minutes). If your voice is actually going out, rest it.

I would also like to caution you against tea. Warm liquids are very beneficial to relax and soothe the larynx, but you're also getting that with a steam routine. If you really must stick with the tea, please be sure to drink decaffeinated since caffeine can stimulate the muscles and keep them too tight (which can lead to further stress on your voice rather than relaxing it).

Salt water, also, is a no-no when used too often. Salt and citric acid (lemon juice) will dry out your throat and negate the lovely benefits of all that water you're drinking. They can be nice when used very sparingly, but beware of over use.

If you are getting sick, I would recommend that you keep up the water intake, as well as eating oranges (not drinking just orange juice) which contains enough citric acid to keep you from getting phlegm-y without over-drying. Also, a cup of decaff tea with honey and a touch of red pepper (yes, RED PEPPER) will help with any nasal congestion.

If you do not know your instrument (voice) you should not practice unless you have to, I do not think that is the case though.

Drink lots of water and rest, there is no need to push your voice just because you want to sing. Be patient and see in the next few days how your voice is going to thank you.

Good luck and remember, your voice is unique and irreplaceable, take good care of it.
Reply:It will, trust me when i was practising for my singing exam i practised when it was sore and it just made it much worse, if i were you dont sing and try not to talk, drink plenty of fluids and take some good medicience, also if your stuck see your doctor and ask him whats best.
Reply:It could definitely mess up your throat. My advice is to wait until it gets better. Also, talk as little as possible, take medicine, and drink lots of fluids so your throat will get better faster.
Reply:i would wait for a while b4 u try to sing...ur just straining ur voice by singing when ur throat hurts...drink tea with lemon in it...or water with lemon...it should help ur throat.
Reply:Don't sing while ill!! your throat is already straining to just speak. It doesn't cause permanent damage but prolongs the healing substantially. drink room temperature fresh lemonade to promote healing and drink fresh lemnade as a refresher when you are going to be singing. it works wonders.
Reply:yea. my mom sang once while she had a sore throat and it ruined her voice completely and she used ot be a really good singer and now, shes not.
Reply:Yes, you should try to avoid singing and speaking until your throat is better. For the record, if you have a cold, but not a sore throat, it's alright to sing; professional singers sing with colds all the time. But once the throat is sore, you'll just make things worse by singing.

In order to get over your sore throat sooner, drink plenty of water, and gargle with warm salt water -- this is much better than using cough drops. Also, you want to avoid dry coughing, so if you have congestion in your lungs or bronchial tubes, use a decongestant or a good cough syrup (but you should check with your doctor before doing this, if you're a minor).

Finally, I always tell my students with colds and allergies to put a dab of mentholatum around the outside of each nostril before going to sleep. A lot of the time, people with colds get sore throats because their stuffy noses cause them to sleep with their mouths open; this dries out the vocal chords and makes the sore throat worse. Getting your nasal congestion clear so that you sleep with your mouth closed will help the sore throat to heal faster. You can find mentholatum at any pharmacy; it's in a little green jar. I found out about this in college, and it's helped with many a cold.

They don't know unless you give it away. Or if they know the songs by heart. Even then, if you can make it work, it won't be as noticeable.

If you sing the song loud with confidence and emotion, they'll believe you and think it sounds great. When you mumble or stumble or get all tripped up over one mistake, they'll know you're unsure of yourself and think it's not that great. It's amazing how you project and how your stage presence affects how people hear you. A lot has to do with how they see you.
Reply:When you are singing in the choir in a musical, it depends on the size of the choir, the size of the orchestra, and the size of the mistake. Let's put it this way, I wouldn't exactly try experimenting this while actually performing, for reasons I'm sure you can think of, being that you haven't elaborated for a good awnser. But yeah, usually the audience isn't trained enough to catch the mistake. :)
Reply:*In general*: Yes, the audience will hear a mistake, but the more parents and relatives are out there, the less they'll notice. If you sing a bum note, odds are someone is going to catch it. If you sing a bum line, or ad-lib a verse, the audience may get fooled into believing it was changed for a reason.

99% of the time, the audience will care about it a lot less than you. And they'll catch many fewer mistakes than you will. You're always your own worst critic when it comes to goof-ups.

Reply:It all depends on the type of mistake - and how well trained the audiences' ears are. Also - are you singing solo, or in a big group? If you're singing in a big group, or even playing in a large instrumental ensemble, small mistakes here and there typically go unnoticed by the audience. But again, someone with a well trained ear may still notice something is out of tune, or altogether wrong. However, going solo is a different scenario. For instance, if a soloist voice cracks when hitting a high note...most people can easily pick up on that. A mistaken lyric is pretty noticeable as well, unless no one but the soloist knows the words, in which case a good cover-up can probably hide the mistake altogether. So many factors to take into consideration - hope this helps a bit - please let me know if anything came across as confusing.

One thing I just have to add though. Making a mistake while singing a song "loud with confidence and emotion" doesn't necessarily mean the audience will forget your error. For some people, even the slightest mishap can taint their enjoyment of a piece, and linger in their mind for the rest of the show and beyond. I can remember every time I heard a soloist on Broadway crack while aiming high. But again, the guy sitting next to me may have missed it altogether.
Reply:It depends on the audience. When singing/performing music if you are performing in front of an audience who knows the music very well and has a background in music they are more apt to notice. (My sister and I who grew up learning and performing music notice when my mother messes up when playing piano and vice versa) But if your audience doesn't have a background in music they are less likely to notice mistakes.

Also if you make a face or you do something to show that you made a mistake this will bring attention to a mistake. So just perform your heart out and do you best. That is all that anyone can ask for.
Reply:Depends on how good you are at covering it up. A very good friend of mine once said, "If you screw up, always blame it on your character!" It also depends on how well the audience knows the play, how big or close the screwup is, and if there is something going on to distract the audience from you at the time. If you have a good ensemble, a fellow actor or actress will often deliberately distractthe audience if it is obvious that you are about to lay the big egg. Sometimes the Pit Band can help out, and sometimes you are just standing alone with the big egg all over your face, and you have to learn to love it. It's all about conflict and resolution and you have to learn to deal with all of it as it comes at you. A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer in your pants.

If it was the first time encounter, out of the blue and off the cuff, yes. She would have every reason and rhyme to conclude the likes. We have been in life long enough to not believe in love at first sight, and to not be too trusting of strangers. We should be alarmed when the unexpected happens, as if to sweep us off of our feet and put us at ease, the opposite is more likely to happen.

My advice is dress nice, be clean, wear sufficient but not over powering eau de parfum and make yourself interesting. Walk with purpose, be casual, have a smile in your eyes and in your voice. If a man can get a woman to smile and feel secure within the first 3-10 seconds, then the ice is broken. And that was caused by a warmth and not the force of a dubious overwhelming personality.

Now on the otherhand, if you're a wild and zany type, friendly and harmless, and after an offer on a blind date, and the two of you were forwarned of offhandedness, and quirks, and basic expectations of each other, then the song would break a lot of ice, as long as other appropriate actions and conversation, eye contact, a gentle masculiness, being a witty man, with intelligent talk, and a purposeful perspective in life, then I'd say this conduct, could or would be totally on par.

If compounded with other things done and said right, you were to be found as interesting, fun loving, the "insanity plea" and basis and foundation is established. She is put at ease.

But just the song alone with a complete stranger would set off alarms.

And if it didnot, then you would have to be the one to be afraid of the stranger you were singing to. For the hunter would most likely become the hunted.

It's weird how I just got my new pair of color contacts today and I put them on so I can get use to them~ cause they're a little thicker than the usual clear ones I normally wear, and all of the sudden I'm looking at my self in the mirror saying to my self "damn..I look cute with these on".... I loooveeee 2 sing~~especially looking at my self in the mirror so I can look at the weird faces I put when I'm singing.lol.....soooo... I- out of the blue started singing and it's like my voice got better.... WTF... Is that freaken' normal???My singing got better... I felt like a different person (more confident) or something....? I hold back a lot because I don't want my neighbors to hear me sing or if not that- I dont sing on front of anyone. No one was in the house, so I let go and I was a little shocked at my singing... Your contacts probably helped you gain confidence and feel better about your singing. I find that when I just let go and feel great my singing improves vastly, too. If you are open with your voice and push with your diaphragm, then all you'll have to be is happy and you're voice will be as pure and crystalline as a diamond!

Seriously though, approach her as pleasantly as possible and tell her that her singing is disrupting your work and ask her not to sing. If you can't do that or it doesn't work, speak to your supervisor. Be very careful about criticizing her or you will look like the bad person. Put the onus on yourself and workplace professionalism. Say that it's distracting and disrespectful to the others who have to work in earshot. Good luck.

sorry to say but people do things to intentionally annoy others. If you pay her know mind or get with her maybe that will help. Every time you let her know that shes annoying you you are giving her power over you. Leave the duct tape alone because then she will find other ways to annoy you. Trust me, I have 3 younger siblings and 1 older one who I use to annoy.

okay so for my competition I have to sing for one of my songs "Fallin" by alicia keys, my problem is, is that Im more of a classical singer and broadway but this competition is all about being able to do all different types of Genra's of music. My question is, is how can i sing falling without sounding like im shouting. I sing in my head voice but then i just sound soft and "Classicle like" and this song is a stronge song. So how do i get that power in my voice without hurting my voice expecially when it comes to the higher notes.

I don't think it's impossible but you can't develop that kind of sound in a short time. It's a very physical song so you need to be quite strong and fit to push the breath over your vocal cords. I just wish you loads of luck, and you'll be better than the other guys at your kind of song anyway.

P.S. Have you watched A.K. singing live? She is using an awful lot of neck muscle! Now although she sounds great, I don't like her technique! (The song on YT was a video, she was probably mouthing the words so the muscle work didn't show.) Are they compelling you to sing this song, or can you change track?

okay, so im a very expirienced performer, but i have very little singing experience, and this year i started taking voice lessons. my teacher thinks that im ready to be in our recital, but i am NOT looking forward to it. i hate my song with every fiber of my being, and i also know that i am going to look incredibly stupid singing "A Spoon Full of SUgar" from Mary Poppins while a bunch of perrrfect sopranos who are 5 years younger then me belt out beautiful broadway ballads. i have no issue with performing, but if i realize that massive humiliation awaits me, i dont want to put myself in that situation. You're making a pretty good argument for why you shouldn't sing the song. Have you asked your teacher why she picked that particular song? Maybe she thinks it fits your pitch and will showcase your talent, but I'm sure there are other songs that would be equivalent in pitch. If you just share with her how you feel (politely, and not dramatically), she may allow you to choose another song, or at the very least select another song for you to perform. If you're taking voice lessons, you are paying her (or your parents are), so she should be willing to allow you some leeway in the song you sing for a recital.

I'm certainly not a great singer by any stretch, and learned that same song at one point; nonetheless, a fun performance will be preferable to the audience than one that just displays vocal talent. Reply:Simple exercise from voice lessons at Utah State University way back when: Sing 5-note scales, one step higher each time, singing "ha ha ha ha ha" for each note. Also place one hand over your abdomen to feel and become more aware of the air pushing up through your abdominal muscles/diaphragm. This was my favorite exercise because it's easy, and it gets your mouth in the right shape to sing. Plus the 'laughing' relaxes you more before a performance. If you have a piano that is best to get the scales on key, unless you have perfect pitch.

Singing.. How to warm up..?
I start off by taking deep breaths...in through the nose, out through the mouth. I do this for what seems a ridiculously long time - about two or three minutes. Then I open my mouth as wide as I can several times. Then I simply go through few scales - low to high. Then I practice one the songs I'm fixing to sing. This always works for me.

If you've got a few days to practice just do the warm ups then practice about an hour a day, but don't wear yourself out. I also gargle saltwater. And this time of year I take a sinus pill.
Reply:Start singing as low as your voice can go (without "cracking") at the same pitch then gradually work your way up to the highest it can go. Next, work on changing from low to high then low again. This and a lot of warm tea the day of should work. Good Luck!

I think it is better for you to do what you truly feel! If you do what someone else says then your not happy with it later. You can do anything, you can even do all these and after gaining more experience with each activity you may even pick up a career like Jennifer Lopez did with her dancing first, then she caught on to acting and singing, just like you she got started with one then it lead to another. Your gonna end up artistic and have a great opportunity in the future!

OR, you could try musical theatre because then you can incorporate all of acting, singing and dancing and improve on all three at the same time. Maybe you could also join orchestra.

Reply:i was in two talent shows in 2nd and 3rd grade. in 2nd grade i sang with my two friends caeleighn and brelynn. we sang the leader of the pack. we wore poodle skirts. (by the way we did not were poodle skirts because they were in style that was the theme of the talent show.the 50's) in third grade i auditioned to play chopsticks on the piano but i didnt get in so i was the narrator. i wish you good luck in your talent show. by the way there are no winners at my school talent show. are there winners at your school?

Reply:REHEARSE A LOT AND VIDEO YOURSELF...make EYE CONTACT with the audience.....MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD DICTION ..if you "overdo the word enunciation" the audience will be able to UNDERSTAND the words and that will help...move around a bit onstage...EAT THE MIKE and have it ALMOST TOUCHING your lips

I know that there was a music video done in the same style, but this film was a old musical as far as i can remember. Someone like Danny Kay or Donnold Conner.

The film is "Small Town Girl" (1953), and the actor who jumped down the street was the late Bobby Van.

Reply:Gene Kelly from Singin' in the Rain was recently re-worked into an advert. It was a remix and they imposed Gene's face onto a body-popper. I wasn't that impressed.

The same film had Donald O'Connor in it and he was amazing.

Reply:Okay, not Singing in the Rain. But pick any other Gene Kelly movie and you'll see him doing the same thing, but dry.

Donald O'Conner did a slapstick number called "Make 'Em Laugh" but it was done indoors on a stage set. He was supposed to be the comic and was doing his routine backstage while the stage hands etc. were carrying furniture around to dress the set, and he was jumping over, under and on top of all the stuff that was going by.

Danny Kaye did some very funny routines, but dancing wasn't one of his skills.
